Quake 2

Plague Quake 2 Devastation update

I’ve started working on a stats page for Plague Devastation, my Quake 2 Devastation server, so that I can automate the collection and parsing of the XML log files produced after every match. Right now I have a basic collection mechanism that runs every twenty minutes that collects any log files produced and ups them to an S3 bucket at AWS.

My intention is to have a utility server pull the data from the S3 bucket and shove it into an Aurora MySQL cluster that can be accessed by a player who wants to see how awesome he/she is.

Plague reborn in Devastation Quake ][

The last update for Plague was over fourteen years ago. My kids didn’t exist yet. The idea of my kids didn’t exist yet.

But now that I am moving out of my colo and splitting my gear between a 42U cabinet in my garage and hosting it in Amazon Web Services, it’s time to reorganize some things. In that light I have started up the Quake 2 Devastation server on a virtual machine in my garage and put up the old plague.rainwalk.net site to talk about it. It’s very, very out of date, but it’s kinda fun to see the origins of this server circa 2003.

I am also working on a statistics page that processes the Devastation server game logs. So far it’s a fairly simple PHP setup that pushes the raw XML data generated by Q2Dev into an Aurora MySQL database. Where it gets tricky is writing the SQL queries and PHP code that parses the data and generates meaningful and interesting match information.

Stay tuned!

New Map List

Unbelievable that it’s been a year since I’ve last updated this page. My how time flies. By popular request, I’ve updated the map list with a bunch of new maps. It’s in a PAK file so all you have to do is download it, unzip it and plop it into your quake\baseq2 directory. If you already have a pak5.pak file, just change the number to something else. Get the new pak file here.

2018 update: Download the full set of files for Plague Devastation including the updated, full-featured game engine (from R1ch.net), from my CloudFront distribution.

December Devastation Monthly Summary

Although I haven’t been playing much due to real life constraints, it looks like the server still sees some action, which makes me happy. Kudos to 0megaMan[APE] for getting the highest cumulative score for December, and to Ent for maintaining the highest map average score.

September Devastation Monthly Summary

I only hosted one Thursday frag this month, and the showings suffer for it, but stuff in real life has sort of taken precedence over gaming, ya know?

New Map List

I’ve been fragging on the ztn2dm for far too long, so I decided to change things up on Plague with a new map list. Pick it up here. The list of maps is:

September 5, 2003 – Thursday Night Frag results

So I was doing just fine last night, in a grove and holding my own when an earthquake hits, screwing with my game. I had to leave after only a few maps due to circumstances beyond my control. Peeps played without me, though, fragging for about two and a half hours. With no Ent, BeerBuzz showed up to take the win:

August 7, 2003 – Devastation frag results

Tonight’s scheduled fest is done and I got pwned! We played for eight maps, or about two hours. Thanks to Section8, Ent, Mike Hawk and Lupin-The-3RD for showing up and making the first scheduled game a good one. Man, I’d forgotten just how fun this game is.

Ent pretty much served up a healthy dose of beatdown and schooled everyone on how Devastation is supposed to be played. In the beginning it was Me v. Ent, and it was never close. ever. Then people started popping onto the server, and things loosened up, erupting into a massive firefight. Good times!
